Since 1959, over 200 studies have been carried out at international universities and articles published in various journals have shown remarkable results supporting its traditional uses.

Apart from its active ingredient, crystalline nigellone, it contains 15 amino acids (including eight of the nine essential ones), carbohydrates, fatty acids including linolenic and oleic, volatile oils, alkaloids and dietary fibre, as well as minerals such as calcium, iron, sodium and potassium. (Fatty acids benefits: Essential fatty acids -- namely Omega-3 and 6 -- have many healthy benefits including strengthening the immune system, lowering the risk factors for cardiovascular disease, help in weight loss, improvement in digestion, skin and hair, and lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels. They are also essential for rebuilding and producing new cells. "These fats are essential nutrients, which are important for life and health. Our body cannot produce them and they must come from outside sources such as food or food supplements. Essential fatty acids are as important to our health as protein, vitamins and minerals. If you do not get enough of these, you would not be able to stay healthy; you would suffer from deficiency symptoms."  Its benefits include lowering blood pressure and cholesterol, reducing the risk of blood clots, heart diseases, strokes, decreasing inflammation, joint pains, swelling and stiffness, and improving mental health and moods. source: http://www.thirdage.com/news/articles/ALT02/07/01/09/ALT02070109-01.html)

Recent research on the black seed as an anti-biotic, anti-tumour, anti-inflammatory, anti-histaminic, anti-bacterial, anti-bronchial and immune boosting agent has shown great promise.

Many of our health problems have similar causes - infection by micro-organisms such as bacteria, viruses, parasites and fungi. Black seed is effective at treating the body as a whole and fights the actual cause rather than the symptoms as is the case with conventional allopathic medicine.

Black seed regulates the immune system and is excellent for treating allergic and hormonal diseases. It supports metabolism, improves digestion, and lowers blood sugar levels, yet provides quick energy.

It is used to dispel worms and parasites from the intestinal tract.

It soothes bronchitis and coughs, improves body tone, calms the nervous system, encourages hair growth and retards hair fall out, prevents skin wrinkling, and much more.

It stimulates menstrual periods, increases the flow of breast milk, increases sperm count.

As an adaptogen, Black Seed is an agent causing adaptive and balancing reactions in many metabolic areas.

Traditional Uses

Black Seed has been traditionally and successfully used in Middle and Far Eastern countries to treat ailments such as bronchial asthma, bronchitis, rheumatism and other inflammatory diseases, digestive disturbances, support the immune system, promote digestion and elimination, and fight parasitic infestation.

The oil has been used to treat skin conditions such as eczema and boils and is used topically to treat cold symptoms. (More details on our Traditional Uses page)

15 amino acids, including all the essential amino acids, including  Arginine, which is essential for infant growth and well researched for it heart health benefits. (Essential amino acids cannot be synthesized within our body in sufficient quantities and are thus required from our diet.)

Chemical analysis has further revealed that the black seed contains carotenes, which is converted by the liver into vitamin A, the vitamin known for its anti-cancer activity.

Black Seed is also a source of calcium, iron, sodium, and potassium. Required only in small amounts by the body, these elements' main function is to act as essential cofactors in various enzyme functions.
